Stage 2 Fine Art: Statement of Intent.
(1) For this project, I have decided to branch out away from my previous work and experience and have decided to explore the idea of poverty and homelessness in Sunderland, I see it as a growing issue in the city and want to base my work around their experiences and stories sleeping rough on the streets, as well as their own personal opinions on people and the city as a whole.
My work last year revolved around architecture and the urban aesthetic of Sunderland, I still want to use these themes but have the idea of poverty and homelessness the main concern I want to address. For me, people and their experiences have more artistic significance than physical places and settings, as it conveys more feeling and emotion, and I want to try and convey this through my work.
(2) In terms of the materials I intend to implement, I would like to branch out and use a variety of materials, techniques and processes to see what would work best to convey the themes of poverty and urban life on the streets, ranging from printmaking to possible etching or digital media, I also wish to implement the use of interviewing people, in order to capture their own personal experiences, trying my best to convey the raw emotion I feel when listening to what these people have to say. I have also dabbled with the concept of using performance art for this project, in order to see what life is really like for these people and do my best to convey that, though I will have to be careful as I do not want others to think what I am doing is a form of mockery or satire.
(3) For myself, success in this project will come down to a variety of things, I hope to create a large amount of varied and visually interesting work that utilises many different materials and processes. I also think that my work should aim to create an interesting dynamic that really affects the audience, giving them an insight into what life is really like on the streets. Hearing the first hand experiences of people who live this life and creating work that will delve into this ever-growing issue accurately and respectively will be how I measure my success in this project.
