Gallery Visit: "Material Sight", Fiona Crisp @ Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.
Hosted in the Glass Centre, the new location for the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Fiona Crisp's "Material Sight" exhibition generated mixed feelings from myself as a viewer. Presented as video and photography installations, it was interesting to have some insight into these underground laboratories, and what occurs within them. Closed off to the public and isolated from the outside world, these images indulge our curiosity in the mysterious nature of these locations.
They worked well in reflecting on the extraordinary scientific nature of these sites, although the documentary connotations that Crisp wanted to avoid are still present to me. The scaffolding and sound installation worked well, both in conveying the scientific themes, and creating an immersive experience, I want to experiment with sound installation in a similar form.
