Theory and Context: Roland Barthes.

“What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially.” -Roland Barthes (Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography)

Barthes' theories relating to cultural studies, such as the relevance of semiotics in post-war society to express 'collective cultural values' have helped give my work a greater focus, but it is this quote from Camera Lucida that has helped inform my practice further.

Photography (and art in general) is about being 'in the moment'; these specific events are frozen in time, and their importance is magnified because we can focus on every single detail, be it major or minuscule. Narratives are generated, the context is more apparent, and the audience can conjure up their own ideas about the scenes captured.
